Stadt der Speere
Sympathisch. Erstaunlich.

Town Hall - Welcome to the website of the city of Schöningen! I am Malte Schneider, the mayor of the city of Schöningen and its two districts, Hoiersdorf and Esbeck.

With its approximately 11,000 inhabitants, Schöningen is the oldest city in the Braunschweig region, nestled idyllically on the eastern slope of the Elm hills, not far from the cities of Helmstedt, Braunschweig, and Magdeburg. Whether as a starting point for extensive walks and bike tours or as a place to live, Schöningen is always worth a visit.

On our website, we would like to offer you the opportunity to embark on a virtual exploration tour of our beautiful city and get to know its many facets. Starting with the oldest discovered hunting weapons in human history - the Schöningen Spears, whose originals can be admired in the Schöningen Research Museum - just a spear's throw away from there, at the Hötensleben Border Memorial, you will find a relic of Germany's recent history: a fully preserved section of the former GDR border installation.

Back in the city center with its numerous green spaces and local amenities, the present offers a variety of cultural and leisure activities. In addition, there is a comprehensive range of childcare options and all types of schools right on site. Furthermore, there are numerous sports clubs offering a wide range of sports, completing the offerings. From football and athletics in the Elm Stadium to golfing and swimming in the city's own indoor swimming pool, there is something for every taste.

Also located in the city center, directly on the newly renovated marketplace, the city administration is available to assist you with various matters at the Citizen Service Office of the Town Hall.

For more information, I invite you to browse through the respective categories. If you cannot find something, please feel free to contact us, and we will be happy to assist you. I wish you a lot of enjoyment during your visit and look forward to personally welcoming some of you as guests in our city.
